Inspired by the sounds of dusty vinyl, dirty guitars, dangerous drum breaks and dynamic synthesizers, the band explores elements of funk, hip-hop, rock and soul in their completely original style. Heavily influenced by the loop digga movement and decades of musical history, Messy Jiverson is psychedelic rock with a hip-hop flair and hard dance beats. Cropdusters were formed in the hours between last call and sunrise, in the back room of a smoky bar in Springfield, MO. Since that moment in August 2008, they’ve quickly moved from the back room to the front stage, bringing their after-hours, Ozarkian songwriting with them. Consisting of members of established bands, these four fine gentlemen have been called upon to open for multiple national acts including Hayes Carll, Big Smith, and Macon Grayson and have no intentions of slowing down. don’t be surprised if the night ends where the whole thing began – in the near-twilight glow coming through the window of a closed-for-the-night bar. Stoney LaRue plays music that combines the rootsy, emotionally honest sound of country with the beer-drinking swagger of heartland rock and a dash of the moody undercurrents of the blues. LaRue was born in Taft, TX, to a musical family -- his father played bass in a number of local bands -- and he grew up listening to the country and Southern rock that would inform his later work. When he was a teenager, LaRue's family pulled up stakes for Oklahoma, and with time LaRue would become part of the Stillwater, OK, "Red Dirt" musical community, along with likeminded acts such as Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jason Boland, and Mike McClure. Forming a road band called the Organic Boogie Band, LaRue began storming honky tonks and dancehalls in Oklahoma and Texas, winning a loyal following for his passionate live shows, and in 2002 he released his first album, Downtown, recorded during a concert for a specially invited audience at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, OK. The album was a solid calling card for LaRue and his group, and they began spending most of the year on the road, playing up to 300 dates a year, but in 2005 LaRue stayed in one place long enough to record his first studio disc, appropriately titled The Red Dirt Album, which earned enthusiastic reviews and cast a stronger focus on LaRue's skills as a songwriter. In the spring of 2007, LaRue released his third album, which was also his second live set -- Live at Billy Bob's Texas, recorded during a 2006 gig at the famous Fort Worth venue. Sat. February 27	» True/False Film Festival Presents Mahjongg, Capybara, Raya Brass Band - $10 / 9:00 pm	?
With modest beginnings at the math department of the University of Missouri, Mahjongg relocated to sunny Chicago. With the move came a few new members and the evolution of the band's unique electronic-tribal-DIY-dance sound. The band eventuall caught the eye(ear?) of K Records founder Calvin Johnson, who subsequently signed them. Growing up in St. Louis, Missouri, Zito was immersed in the gritty sounds of the south side that would unknowingly become the groundwork of his future in music. Like the legends before him, music has coursed through his veins from the early age of five, when he began singing and performing. It didn’t take long for him to discover his instrument of choice – electric guitar – after receiving a Van Halen record for his birthday. Zito’s journey took off at the age of 19, when he busted into the local St. Louis music scene, developing his sound even further from the stage. His first independent release arrived in 1996, titled “Blue Room” which included raw and funky songs “Hollywood” and “Pull the Trigger”. His songwriting experience would break through on his sophomore release titled “America’s Most Wanted” in 1999. This album shares his pop sensibilities and intense guitar work. "Crazy People", "Deal Me In" and his own rendition of Elton John’s "Rocket Man" all set the pace to bring him into a national audience. Mike Zito

When you think of Palm Beach, Florida, what comes to mind? Palm trees swaying gently in the balmy breeze? Scantily-clad bikini buxom babes rollerblading down an infinite slab of coral-colored concrete? How about anthemic, bombastic, life-affirming indie pop? If the latter didn’t occur to you, let us introduce you to Surfer Blood: they call West Palm Beach home and, while still in their early 20s, have penned Astro Coast an album worth of catchy, summery indie songs that even the most hook-laden power pop band would rightfully be jealous of...That album was also recorded in a dorm room using equipment purchased with scholarship money. Priorities. Turbo Fruits are led by Jonas Stein (ex-Be Your Own Pet) who has the word "Tennessee" tattooed on his back. They play guitar, bass and drums. Considering their undeniable musical skills, these guys could take themselves very seriously if they wanted to, but Speakeasy is not afraid to bring outrageous fun into their shows. After a feast of original tunes that combine tasteful songwriting with pull-no-punches rock n' roll, they've been known to top off their show with an unlikely cover or two ranging from The Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere" to Digital Underground's "The Humpty Hump." Deer Tick is a rock n roll band originally from Providence, Rhode Island. The band is John Joseph McCauley III, Andrew Grant Tobiassen, Christopher Dale Ryan, and Dennis Michael Ryan. The band began in December of 2004 as a drums and guitar duo. Within a few years the band developed into a quartet featuring two guitars, bass and drums, with three members singing and writing, and one writing string arrangements. Wasilla, AK via Portland, OR band Portugal. The Man has a varied sound. Their style is rooted in indie, but their songs also contain elements of soul, blues, and folk music. At times, the band chooses to utilize drum machines and/or synth loops to anchor their songs, while at other times, the band chooses to use the more conventional guitar, bass, and acoustic drum configuration characteristic of rock music. The band also utilizes keyboards in much of its music. In addition to their instrumentals, Gourley's distinctly higher-pitched vocals add to Portugal. The Man's unique sound. Lyrically, Gourley provides the band with abstract and/or enigmatic lyrics that rely heavily on imagery. Gourley's verses are usually delivered in the first-person singular or plural. At 10 years of age, Brody Buster appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno and opened B.B. King's Blues Club in L.A., jamming with The King of the Blues, B.B. King. In 1996 at the age of twelve, Brody was invited to perform at the prestigious "Montreux Blues and Jazz Festival" in Montreux Switzerland with Quincy Jones, Isaaac Hayes, Oleta Adams, Chaka Khan, Phil Collins, Keb Mo', Richie Havens and Melvin Taylor. Brody has been a regular performer at the Kansas City Blues and Jazz Festival since 1994. Japandroids (aka JPNDRDS) is a two piece band from Vancouver, BC. This 'band' started in 2006 as a creative outlet for the post-teenage angst of Brian King and David Prowse. Originally intended to be a trio, the boys decided to forgo the logistical nightmare of having a 'lead singer' and do it themselves. As a consequence, Japandroids are 1 guitar, 1 set of drums, and 2 vocalizers. They call it garage rock. They don't care what you call it, as long as it's not minimal. Tue. April 20	» Rogue Wave - $12 / 8:00 pm	?
Rogue Wave began almost by accident. In early 2002, faced with the sort of existential crisis unique to the newly unemployed, Zach Rogue decided to take some time off from his home base of San Francisco. He set off with a one-way ticket to New York in March with the intention of recording one or two songs with a friend, in an effort to exorcise his demons both artistically and personally. He came away with both a new lease on life and an album's worth of material that would later become Rogue Wave's debut, Out of the Shadow. After touring non-stop for over a year in support of their second album Descended Like Vultures they took a much-deserved break (though they did come out of hiding to contribute “Sightlines” to the hit Spiderman 3 soundtrack) and returned to the forefront with Asleep at Heaven's Gate in 2007.
